Change in Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate after Major Hip Surgry

Abstract
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) has been considered the most important among the laboratory tests for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic diseases.
The value of ESR is dependent upon its high sensitivity for all forms of inflammatory disease. After major surgical operation, the ESR often increases to high levels and, if sepsis does not supervene, it return to normal within a few months. Authors have performed a study on the postoperative changes of ESR during the first one month in thirty uncomplicated hip surgeries.
The results were as follows;
1. The peak elevation of ESR was occurred during the first week after operation.
2. The elevated value of ESR usually return to normal within the first month, although in one third of the cases, elevated value persist.
